On Monday Tim went along to the Oval in south London to see the final day of the 4th cricket test between England and South Africa. Always a tough one in terms of who to support...like choosing between a poke in the eye and a kick in the pants. But we figured South Africa was the lesser of two evils...at least they have reason to be arrogant.
Anyway, South Africa had already won the series 2-0 after three tests and they looked decidedly disinterested in this match. England on the other hand had replaced their captain after the 3rd test and were in a strong position to get a consolation win going in to the final day.
The Oval is a fairly solid ground, although it's got nothing on Lord's. It is quite small and it was close to full for the final day. Every man and his dog had come out to see England win a cricket game...it doesn't happen too often. Sure enough England chased down the 197 they needed to win, losing 4 wickets in the process. The openers, Cook and Strauss, batted very well - both made half centuries. Seeing the new England captain, Kevin Pietersen, bat was pretty cool, although he didn't last long. Watching Makhaya Ntini bowl was pretty special too - especially when he knocked Ian Bell's leg stump out of the ground. Poor technique Ian.
But the highlight of the day was the chicken and vegetable Cornish pasty Tim had for lunch - very tasty. Although Tim made a rookie mistake and took a big bite out of the middle of his first ever Cornish pasty, shortly after which he discovered that the contents of a Cornish pasty are around 150 degrees and burn the insides of your mouth.
